Notes on Basic Operators
Your searches on EBSCO can be aided greatly by the usage of the Operators. These allow for search terms to include, reject, or use alternative means of information. The most frequent operators you will see, and the ones that will aid the most in the usage of the EBSCO system are Boolean Operators AND, OR, and NOT. They provide additional parameters that will help in the narrowing done of information to only that which you are actively searching for. AND will find and narrow results that contain both included search words or terms.
OR will allow you to seach for terms or an alternative that you have provided, and
NOT will exclude what you enter.
Provided are basic examples of the Operators in usage to help illustrate the point:
A AND B will include results that include both A&B in the results.A OR B will search for either term, and give results that feature A or B.
A NOT B will restrict results by filtering out any that contain B, leaving you with only A.
On the next few pages, see sidebar, we will begin to examine and look over the various forms of searching and the options for doing so.
